Success Story — Clay Griffin

“There’s no doubt that we all strive to find a sense of belonging, a feeling that we’re making a difference. I, just like many other residents of Marion County, wake up every morning hoping that I can do just that; to make a difference and help make someone’s life a little easier. I grew up as a broke kid in the north end of the county being told to “chase my dreams” and “reach the stars” and now I get to do that every single day. When I wasn’t in the classroom learning or in my bed sleeping, I had a ball in my hands. Whether it was a baseball, football or basketball, I was doing something sports related. Now I get to do that every day as a physical teacher at Belleview-Santos Elementary. I go to sleep every night satisfied because I get to do exactly what I want to do with my life. It’s a great feeling, but none of it would be possible without Take Stock in Children.

I was born to a mother who dropped out of the ninth grade to take care of her ailing father and a dad who worked as laborer in the landscaping industry making just over minimum wage. No one in my family had the fortune to earn a college degree, so for me, that idea was foreign. What I did have, though, was love and support from both my parents and all of my teachers. I wasn’t seen as a product of any type of environment but, rather, for the potential I had. Through education, I was given the foundation to make a successful life. When I was introduced to the Take Stock in Children scholarship in the eighth grade, I was given the means to build upon that foundation. I grew up in a very low-economic household so without this scholarship, a college education would have been out of the question.

Through Take Stock in Children I was shown what it means to work hard, following through on a commitment, and to be contributing part of the community. Throughout high school, I was held accountable for my grades and behavior because there was something great waiting for me at the end; a college education. I was able to work with other students in similar scenarios and learn that I’m not alone in my struggles. Along with the entire Take Stock in Children staff, I found a support system that encouraged me every step of the way and has shown sincere pride when I achieve something today. I’ll never begin to put into words how much this program has meant to my life and family. The only thing I can do is give back, with my time, my energy, my sincerity and my knowledge. I have that opportunity because of the Take Stock in Children scholarship program.”
